At 8:00 pm Sunday, January 4, 2009, at the Living Room Nite Club in Fort Lauderdale, the ideas of gender are out the door. Drag It Out, a professional and amateur (PRO-AM) Drag Night of delight, is a fundraiser raising awareness to benefit the KIDS, the QUEERS and the ANIMALS! All donations ($10 per person) will go to four local charities in need; Safe Schools South Florida, Yes Institute, Animal Aid, and the GLCC’s Lavender Events for Women. With over ten performers acting out gender impersonations, this event will spread awareness through entertainment, and connect night life with contribution. The creator, Tabatha Mudra, a self-employed photographer, created the project while participating in a Landmark Education leadership program, an international training and development company, who is known for offering their flagship course The Landmark Forum (www.landmarkeducation.com) where part of the coursework, was to create a project that benefits the community, hence the result is Drag It Out; a fully self expressed and fun experience where the lines of what gender is suppose to be versus what one makes it are explored.
“Gender-bending is a controversial/stigmatic form of self-expression as performance art. To have participants at all levels of experience, of all ethnicities, and sexual orientation has been a real treat. Classes were formed like a training camp where a professional impersonator coached amateurs in character building, physical adjustments, facial make-up and performance. Watching the growth and transformation of each individual during the classes has been one of the biggest gifts, even more so since all of the participants are volunteers, making this happen for the greater good of all concerned!”
